Benefits of Resistance Training

Exercising is one of the best things you can do for your health, and resistance training should be right at the top of your fitness programme.

Resistance training can include using free weights, weight machines, resistance bands and your own body weight.

Gone are the days you are slogging it out on the treadmill to achieve your fitness goals. Resistance training, also known as weight training or muscular training, not only makes you stronger, but it has proven to be fundamental to one’s health. If you have been to see one of our physiotherapists, you may have been assigned various strength exercises to help you increase your mobility as well.

The benefits to resistance training have no end! Today let’s look at perhaps some not well-known advantages such as: how it can improve bone density, increase energy levels, and prevent injuries.

Improved Bone Density

Bone density and its health may not be something you think about often, but nevertheless important. Studies show that bone density declines after age 30 with more rapid increase later in life. Unfortunately for women after menopause, they can lose up to 40% of their inner bone mass within a decade! Bones are living tissues that get stronger with exercise. Resistance training applies stress on the muscles and bones which in turn activates the production of bone forming cells and creates denser bones. Amazing! As you can see, it is vital to start or keep up weight training to lower your chances of getting weaker bones and fractures.

Increased Energy Levels

How does pumping iron or pushups give you more energy? While you are exercising, the heart is pumping out oxygen and nutrients into your muscles. During this you are also raising proteins that take glucose out of your blood and into your muscles. In the short term this gives you more energy. With long term weight training, you are building muscles and getting fitter. Daily tasks become a bit easier and less draining when you feel more energetic and equipped to maintain physical tasks.

Preventing Injuries

We had a look at how resistance training can help your bones to stay strong and prevent it from breaking easily as you age. It also strengthens the muscles, tendons, and ligaments around the joints. Your range of motion becomes better too. All of this contributes to your body being able to handle stress better and improve performance. However, injuries can still happen and when it does, contact Dynamic Physio. Our physiotherapy and acupuncture team can help you rehabilitate, relieve pain, and strengthen your body.
